surrogate...

a surrogate, by definition, is someone who takes the place of another person.

now, culturally you automatically think of a surrogate mother. don't go there. i'm not. you don't need to either.

this weekend i had time with two of my surrogate families here at newpointe. saturday i hung out with my walnut creek family doing a little bit 'o spring cleaning and hanging out. we got their house ready for the summer. scrubbed down the porch. put out the summer furniture. rearranged the living room. you know, stuff i used to do with my family.

sunday was easter. now, if you're a "transplant" like me you'll understand. see, my family doesn't live here and i work at a church. so basically i work every holiday and don't really have blood family to spend it with. so, sunday i spent time with my new philadelphia family. we came home after church. ate ham. ate potatoes. ate rigatoni. (cause they're italian and they have 'traditional' foods AND italian foods on holidays. double score!) ate candy. played with their kids in the yard. cut down limbs from a tree. ate dessert - twice. you know, stuff i used to do with my family. (except replace german wherever you see italian.)

and this weekend, at both houses, i realized something. family is something we can take for granted, but it's also something we can create.

you see, no matter where i live or what my life looks like i can always create a family.

maybe you feel alone, but here's what i'm learning. you can be the change you want to see. do you want surrogate family? take a risk and put yourself out there.

sometimes taking the first step is hard, but it is definitely worth it.
