love language...

there's a language that we all speak whether we realize it or not. it's called love languages. a love language is the way you give love to others and the unique way you feel loved by the people around you. there are many ways you can give and receive love, but our quest in relationships is how to show and receive love well from the people around us. it's not always easy and it takes investigation and intentionality, but in the end it is definitely worth the effort.
the love languages are as follows...
physical touch
acts of service
quality/quantity time
words of affirmation
receiving gifts
(i think there should be something about food in there, but ya know...)
think about yourself...when do you feel most loved by the people around you? for me, i feel the most loved when i have someone's undivided attention. i feel loved when someone takes time out of their busy day to talk, or spend time together. it really doesn't have to be a huge chunk of time, but the more intentional the time is, the more i feel cared for.
although i love spending time with the people i love i feel most loving towards others when i get a gift. i don't know what it is about gift giving that does it for me, but it's seriously one of my favorite things in life. gift cards are great, but i love buying that special gift for someone. when i give a gift i want the person to know that i have thought through what i want to give and there is intention behind my purchase.
the love languages can radically change the relationships in your life - it's changed mine. i remember getting frustrated with people who would try to serve me, when all i really wanted was a conversation. i'm sure i have people in my life who wish i would not worry about buying the perfect gift, but show them love in their specific love language.
maybe this christmas the best gift you can give is the gift of understanding. with a little understanding and a little common ground we can learn to love and be loved even better.
