hands on learner...

the thermostat in my house stuck on 62 degrees about 3 weeks ago. wasn't a big deal until recently when the temps consistently dipped below 32 degrees. needless to say - it was chilly in the big old house. i mean, it's drafty anyways, but it was extra chilly.
yesterday the facilities director from newpointe came over and declared the thermostat dead. he offered to fix it, but i decided to tackle the project myself. yes, you heard right. matt beres. all alone. doing home improvement projects.
i was nervous. about the time this photo was taken the heat was leaving the house and i feared sleeping in 30 degree weather all night. but, i have to say - i successfully installed it all alone! i was pleased with myself.
i had no idea how to install a thermostat. i didn't even know where to begin until i decided to take it apart and get it done.
aren't our lives like that? i was thinking this morning how similar that is to my own life and spiritual growth. i mean, we all say that we want to grow as a leader, as a christ follower, as a (fill in the blank), but many times we are unwilling to have our lives sitting on the dining room table all torn apart fearing it won't be put back together how we want.
the most growth in my life has happened when something is going on in my life forcing me to change, not just sitting around reading about leadership, growth, etc. i think, deep down inside we are all hands on learners who need real life examples.
so, when you're sitting there with the parts and pieces of your life spread out all over the table just think about the growth that is going on in your life.
and don't worry - the heat will come back on.
