descriptive or prescriptive?

this past week i was in florida with our students at big stuf camp. we had an awesome time on the beach, going to sessions, and just hanging out. life changing really...
the sessions were amazing. the speakers were great, but my favorite part was the worship. it rocked. the guys from north point did an awesome job. i love singing, but it was cool to pause and just watch high schoolers praise jesus. awesome.
lately i have been thinking about singing at church. honestly, sometimes i have a hard time saying some of the words that are in songs we sing. for example, how can i sing songs that say "you have my whole heart" or "i live for you alone" or "everyday it's you i live for"
i struggle with this, so i was thinking about it this past week...
are the lyrics we sing descriptive or prescriptive? are the songs that we sing describing the condition or our heart at that moment - or are the lyrics a prescriptive goal?
thoughts?
